Afeni Shakur was a member of the Black Panthers she was involved in the famous Panther 21 incident where she and 20 others were convicted for allegedly plotting to blow up banks and department stores. Her relation to Tupac is that she's his mother and she had raised him. Tupac was very close to his mom and he expresses that on the track 'Dear Mama' on the CD Me Against The World. | | |
Assata Shakur |
Tupac's aunt Assata Shakur, dubbed the "soul" of the Black Liberation Army, is arguably the most famous member of the Shakur Family. Currently living in Cuba. In a highly controversial case she was convicted of murder in a shoot-out on the New Jersey State Turnpike in 1973. An officer and Tupac's uncle, Zayd Shakur, were both killed. The third person in the vehicle, Sundiata Acoli, has served 20 years of her sentence and has been denied parole for another 20. Assata was shot in the back, taken to the hospital and tortured while questioned. She had a broken clavicle and a paralyzed arm. Despite the fact that forensic evidence showed that she had not fired a weapon, she was sentenced to life + 33 years in prison. Assata escaped from prison in 1979 and fled to Cuba where she is living now under a grant of asylum from the government of Fidel Castro. There are currently campaigns to free Sundiata Acoli and prevent the US's attempt to extradite Assata from Cuba. Mutulu Shakur was Tupacs Step-Father an together they created the 'Code of Thug Life.' Which was a list of rules discouraging random violence among gangsta rappers. Mutulu was sentenced 60 yrs in jail after been acused of allegedly conspiring against the US government in 1986. In 1981 he had been arrested as been the brains behind the robbery of Brinks in which two Nyack, New York policemen and a Brinks guard were killed. Mutulu maintains his innocence. | | |
